Few can argue that Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger aren’t the best of friends, and they have frequently had run ins with each other over the years. The Chelsea boss insists he wants English clubs to do well in Europe however, and claims he wants Arsenal and both Manchester clubs to succeed, as reported by Sky Sports.
Chelsea were the only English team to win their opening Champions League fixture, destroying Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-0 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. We were simultaneously putting in a poor performance against Croatian minnows Dinamo Zagreb, while the night before both the red and blue sides of Manchester crashed to defeats against PSV Eindhoven and Juventus respectively.
English teams performing poorly in Europe could have a terrible impact on the long term future of the English game, as we could see only three Premier League teams in the competition as a result.
Mourinho clearly knows this, and claims he is not happy about the misery of his Premier League rivals.
“It’s sad,” he said.
“I think it’s bad. I’m not happy with that.
“I want Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal to lose in the Premier League. I don’t want them to lose in the Champions League so it’s not good for us.
“Season after season it’s difficult for English teams to be successful and to start the group phase, where you can make 12 points, and out of the 12 points you make only three, it’s bad news for English football.”
Fans often have such a hatred for their domestic rivals that they are thrilled when they lose in European competition. This seems like a natural reaction, but we have to think of the big picture when it comes to the Champions League.
Arsenal transfer news
You won’t often see this site siding with Jose Mourinho, but the Blues boss is right that we need English teams to step up in the Champions League. Hopefully Arsenal can make Mourinho happy by improving our form in Europe, but not before making him miserable by smashing his side at the Bridge this weekend.
