We have long been linked with a move for Barcelona youngster Sergi Samper, with a defensive midfielder high on our list of priorities. Manchester United have apparently joined the race for his signature though, and are looking to lure him to Old Trafford in January, as reported by the Daily Star.
The report claims Arsene Wenger is keen on the 20-year-old, and may look to activate his £8.5m release clause in January. They claim we’re facing competition from Manchester United though, with one of their scouts monitoring him during Barcelona’s recent Copa del Rey game against Villanovense.
Samper looks like an excellent prospect and could be exactly the understudy we need for Francis Coquelin. The Frenchman’s form is far too fantastic to consider replacing him, but we unquestionably need better backup than Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta.
The idea that Manchester United are interested in Samper is a bit strange, as they have a plethora of options in that position. With Michael Carrick, Morgan Schneiderlin, Marouane Fellaini, and Bastian Schweinsteiger at the club, they already struggle to fit all their stars in – not to mention the fact that Daley Blind is more than capable of playing in midfield.
Arsenal transfer news
Hopefully we get a clear path to Samper, and Wenger is able to convince him that the Emirates is where his future lies.
