Arsene Wenger is an extraordinarily eloquent and well spoken man, and interviews extremely well. His latest interview is more than a little different however, and when talking about the team spirit at Arsenal, he went off on a tangent about flowers, as reported by the Metro.
We are known for our team unity, and all the players seem to get on fantastically. We haven’t had this level of team cohesion in years, and as Wenger states in his interview, that is a huge part of a successful and title winning side.
The players don’t just play for themselves, they play for the team, they play for each other, and they play for the manager.
As Theo Walcott previously revealed, the players held a secret meeting ahead of our 3-0 win over Manchester United (via The Telegraph). During this meeting, the team discussed their disastrous performance against Olympiacos in the Champions League, and agreed to put things right against United and make amends to Wenger – who was bearing the brunt of the criticism following the controversial loss.
The manager puts a huge amount of faith in his players, and gives them the support he feels they need. He clearly puts a lot of stock in spirit, and suggests that – like a flower – it needs to be nurtured and cultivated.
“How important is team spirit? You can ask the question the other way around: can you be successful without team spirit? If I asked you that question, straight away you would say no,” said Wenger.
“That just shows you how important itdifficult to put a percentage on it, but you know without it you have no chance.
“Afterwards, what is interesting is to know how big the team spiritcan have different degrees of team spirit, because without it you have no football at all – everybody would just do what he wants.
“But how far can you go in cultivating and developing that team spirit? That’s our target. We know that to have a chance of being successful, we want to be more of a team than any other side in the Premier League.
“Therefore, I believe it’s a little bit like a flower. You have to take care of it and look after it every day, or else it will slowly die.
“But as well, you can make the flower bigger, better and prettier if you care forbelieve that part of the responsibility of the players and the staff is to take care of team spirit.”
Hopefully our spirit continues to grow, and we are able to blossom into a team capable of challenging for the title. Despite our stuttering start to the campaign, we haven’t had a team this strong in years.
We are still arguably a couple of players short of reaching our potential, but that is easily remedied.

Let’s just wait and see if Wenger gets all green fingered again this season, and if he’s planted the seeds necessary for a title challenge.
