We have a massive match in the Premier League this weekend, with Manchester United making the trip down to London. We have a few injury worries ahead of the crunch Emirates clash, with midfield and defence of particular concern.
There are a few long term injuries issues, with Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky, and Danny Welbeck still some way off a return (via Arsenal.com). Arsene Wenger has also delivered an update ahead of the game though (via the Mirror), and revealed we will be without a number of other first team stars.
The manager confirmed what many already knew, that Laurent Koscielny would miss the match following a hamstring injury picked up against Olympiacos. He also revealed that Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta would be absent, leaving only Francis Coquelin in defensive midfield.
The French midfielder recovered from an injury to return against Olympiacos, but clearly wasn’t fully fit. Wenger worryingly claimed that Coquelin “should” be fit for the United game, which suggests there are still concerns over the 24-year-old’s fitness.
Other than that we appear to have no new injury issues, and hopefully we’ll see our strongest side start the game – with Petr Cech returning to the starting XI after David Ospina’s blunder in midweek.
Manchester United are likely to be without Ander Herrera and Paddy McNair, as well as Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw – who are both out long term (via The Guardian).
None of these are likely to be major misses for Louis van Gaal, and unfortunately it looks as though Michael Carrick has returned from injury and will be fit to feature. The former Tottenham man gives their midfield a huge boost, and it would have been far more reassuring were he to have missed the clash.
Regardless of who Louis van Gaal starts, we have a team that is more than capable of getting the win – especially at the Emirates. Anthony Martial’s pace will obviously be a concern up against Per Mertesacker, but hopefully we can send them back up the M6 with nothing to show for their trip.
