Despite the dominant looking scoreline where Bayern Munich are concerned, we didn’t actually play all that badly. We were punished by a few mistakes, and struggled with the quality shown by an in-form Bayern side.
There was definitely room for improvement, but there were always question marks over our ability to get something out of the game. This loss does make things tricky going forward though, and our Champions League dream may be over.
Here’s how we rated the players in our 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich:
GK) Petr Cech – 7.0
Despite conceding five goals, the keeper put in a really solid performance. He made a number of great saves, and helped prevent things from getting really embarrassing.
RB) Mathieu Debuchy – 6.5
The Frenchman was poor in the first half, but wasn’t helped by the lazy defending of Joel Campbell. He really improved in the second half however, suggesting that more game time would help get rid of his ring rust. His last ditch tackle on Arjen Robben was particularly excellent.
LB) Nacho Monreal – 7.0
The Spaniard really has been excellent recently, and was the best defender on the day. He was consistently left two-on-one on the left, but dealt with the treat well for the most part.
CB) Gabriel Paulista – 6.5
It was his mistake which predominantly led to the first goal, with the team attempting to play offside when there was no pressure on the ball, and Gabriel caught flat footed. He was decent after that, but the likes of Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski proved too much for him.
CB) Per Mertesacker – 6.5
Really needed to command his troops better, as there just wasn’t enough effort in the first half from the forward line. We needed to defend as a team and track back far more than we did.
