Petr Cech has spoken extremely highly of young shot-stopper Matt Macey, praising his work ethic and willingness to improve in particular, as reported by the Express.
Macey has shown a huge amount of promise at youth level, but with the competition ahead of him he hasn’t quite managed to make enough of an impact to force his way into the senior side.
The 21-year-old has featured on the bench regularly this season, with David Ospina absent for a number of games. Cech clearly seems to think the youngster has a bright future though, and was hugely positive about his chances of succeeding.
Cech has been working regularly with Macey this season, and has taken the junior keeper under his wing. He highlighted Macey’s willingness to improve and take criticism on board, and suggested that taking things slowly and not trying to rush his development was key.
“One thing that is very positive is Matt is very into the work and is willing to improve, to learn and take information on board and understand what it takes to be in the first-team,” he said.
“That is very important because being a part of the first-team is one thing but staying there and continuing to develop is another.

“When you are young, you want everything to happen quickly and certain things that don’t go perfectly or go your way can put you off a little bit.
“But the older players have the job to let the younger ones know that everything takes time and to keep working and it will happen.
“In that way it is easy to work with Matt because he has that willingness to work and to improve and, when you see things happening, you can just say to relax this, try to do this or don’t try to do this.
“Just little things that can help people to understand there are ways to do things that are probably better than what they are doing or upgrade what they are doing. Football is about small details and you can help people do better.”
With Cech our undisputed first-choice and Ospina firmly behind him in the pecking order, Macey may struggle to see first team football anytime soon. We also currently have Wojciech Szczesny out on loan at Roma, with many hoping the Pole will be recalled come the end of the season – even if it’s only to deputise for Cech.
Arsenal transfer news
Macey certainly has a tough road ahead of him, but if he manages to succeed then there will be no questioning his quality.
