Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has called for his teammates to deliver another top quality performance against Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League, following the Gunners’ victory over Swansea City (via Arsenal.com). The Frenchman opened the scoring with an unmarked header from a Mesut Ozil corner, and was generally lively throughout as we eventually won 3-0. This takes his tally up to four goals in the previous five games – it looks like we won’t miss Theo Walcott too much after all.
But there are still a couple of massive games to be played before the international break, namely against Tottenham and Bayern Munich. The game against the Germans is especially important because our European future hangs in the balance, and Giroud is determined to win at the Allianz Arena and secure a valuable three points.
Speaking to Arsenal Player, he said, “It was definitely a good win [against Swansea]. We needed this win before the big game on Wednesday. We started slowly but we were creating chances to score. We needed to wait until the second half to put it in and to score three goals and even more, get another clean sheet.
“We had two difficult games against Swansea and to play here and as I said it was not easy in the first half but we succeeded to play our game [in the second half], more in between the lines with more technique and we were efficient up front and at the back as well so we are really pleased with this game so hopefully we can win the second leg [at Bayern] as well.
“As a striker it is always a pleasure to win, to score again and I will remember the good solidarity. We never give up, even when it is tough for us against a good team. We knew it was going to be difficult but we stayed focused and we are really pleased with the three points.”
Giroud’s goal was also Arsenal’s 2000th under manager Arsene Wenger over the span of his nineteen year career with the north London side. When told about this milestone, Giroud was happy to be the one to achieve it (via Arsenal.com).
“It is cool. I will be proud to say it to my family and my friends. It is also nice to score three goals and not concede one so it is another clean sheet,” he said.
With Walcott out, Giroud is a guaranteed starter for the next few games. Hopefully he will be able to continue his fine goalscoring form and win some games for us.
