Ex-Arsenal star Robert Pires believes Southampton’s Victor Wanyama would be perfect at the Emirates, and has implored Arsene Wenger to sign the Kenyan in the future, as reported by the Metro.
We’re in need of a defensive midfielder more so than ever in the wake of Francis Coquelin’s injury, and Pires believes Wanyama is the player we need. He insists that the Saints star has the perfect mix of speed, skill, and physique, and has tipped him not only to succeed if he were to make the switch to North London, but to become truly world class if he can add goals to his game.
“I know Wanyama,” he said.
“He is a very good ambassador of Kenyan football and has done well in Southampton but I hope he signs for Arsenal in the future.
“He has the speed, skill and physique.
“However, I think he needs to score more goals because then he will be world class material.”
Being an attacking player it’s understandable that Pires would priorities goals, but it’s strange that he’d highlight that area of Wanyama’s game as lacking. Goals are not what you need from your defensive midfielder, and certainly shouldn’t be part of our criteria while on the hunt this January.
Wanyama would be an excellent acquisition, regardless of his lack of goals. He would also offer us something different in midfield, as we currently lack that immovable object style of player in our team.
Unfortunately, Ronald Koeman recently claimed that nobody would be leaving Southampton in January, not even for £100m (via Sky Sports). And while I’m entirely sure that if we actually did offer £100m for the 24-year-old we would have our hand snapped off, there is absolutely not chance of that happening.
Arsenal transfer news
Pires may well get his wish eventually and Wanyama could end up being an Arsenal player, but it doesn’t look like happening any time soon. We should therefore turn our attention elsewhere, and forget about Wanyama for the moment.
