The rumours of Mohamed Elneny’s switch to Arsenal have really been picking up speed over the last few days, with the midfielder himself confirming that a deal has been agreed, according to Egyptian publication Ahram (via the Metro).
The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to North London, with a £5m fee apparently agreed with his current club FC Basel (via the Metro). He is reportedly taking time out of his Christmas holiday and is flying to the capital to finalise the deal (via the Mirror), so it really seems as though this one is happening.
A work permit could be a problem, although as he’s a fully fledged Egyptian international with many caps we will hopefully be able to get that sorted soon. The January transfer window will begin in a matter of days, and we could have Elneny through the door almost as soon as it’s open.
The defensive midfielder could be exactly the player we need to fill in for Francis Coquelin, while also offering something a little different. He may not quite be as defensively astute as the Frenchman, but he has a far better passing range. The pair may even be able to play alongside each other, which will give us a different option in midfield.
The deal has also been reported on the BBC, which is certainly one of the more reliable sources. A rumour doesn’t normally snowball this quickly or pick up this much speed without there being a grain of truth behind it, so regardless of whether this deal goes through in the next few days or not, it is definitely one to keep an eye on.
