Forget all the talk surrounding a bid for Sporting midfielder William Carvalho, as Arsenal have a new Portuguese based midfield enforcer in mind to solve their injury problems. According to Portuguese football newspaper O Jogo (via the Daily Mirror), the Gunners have turned their attention to Porto ace Danilo Pereira.
Arsenal were considering making a bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, before the 23-year-old broke his tibia during last summer’s European Under-21 championships, which appeared to kill off any chance of a move (via ESPN).
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger may be considering reigniting his interest now that Carvalho is back playing, but O Jogo claims he has switched his attention to Danilo, who only joined the Primeira Liga side last summer from Madeira based Maritimo.
Since his move to the mainland, the 24-year-old has shined at his new club, with the Daily Express claiming he would be the perfect player to help ease Arsenal’s injury worries as they march towards a first league title in over a decade.
Despite the injury crisis, Arsenal find themselves second in the league, two points behind leaders Leicester City as we enter the busy holiday fixture list.
From what we have seen of Danilo he looks to be a good replacement for Francis Coquelin, who along with Santi Cazorla may not be ready to play again until March at the earliest (via The Evening Standard).
On the downside, the Express claims he has a buyout clause of £29 million built into his contract, which may be a bit steep considering Wenger is looking for cover rather than a replacement.
