Arsene Wenger is apparently planning to bring in reinforcements in midfield this January, and has identified three players who would be perfect replacements for the injured Francis Coquelin, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Nobody could understand why the Frenchman refused (or was unable) to bring defensive midfield cover to the Emirates over the summer, and we were all left with hearts in mouths every time Coquelin went down. His combative and aggressive style of play meant it was only a matter of time before the 24-year-old succumbed to injury, and he’s now set to be sidelined for quite some time.
Wenger has reportedly named a three man shortlist that he wants brought to the Emirates, and it’s vital that we get at least one of these players in this January.
3) Lars Bender
The German midfielder has seemingly been our top target in recent seasons, but Bayer Leverkusen have so far seemed unwilling to let him go. It seems as though they’re now ready to let him go however, with the Bundesliga side admitting that they would struggle to hold onto their stars in the coming transfer windows (via The Telegraph).
The versatile midfielder would be an excellent acquisition, and could play both instead of and alongside Coquelin when we need a little more defensive stability.
Wenger is clearly a huge admirer of the 26-year-old, but recent injury problems may have turned him off; it’s only just been announced that Bender will undergo ankle surgery (via Goal). Although after the Kim Kallstrom debacle, would we really be surprised at anything?
