We all knew Petr Cech was going to save us points when we signed him from Chelsea this past summer, but did we realise just how crucial he was going to be?
He made yet another phenomenal – and potentially match saving – stop against Sunderland this past Saturday, with the score poised at 1-1 during a crucial part of the game.
Had we gone behind at that point, who knows whether we would have recovered. Instead we were able to pile the pressure on and get the all important goal that would take us back into the lead, eventually putting the game to bed with a third goal.
We looked totally undone by the near post flick on during a Sunderland corner, and it looked for the world like Steven Fletcher was going to find the back of the net. His shot was thankfully towards Cech, but there was still plenty for the veteran shot-stopper to do. He made a superb reaction save to deny the Sunderland striker, reaching out an arm and pulling the ball to safety.
Check out the save below:
The save and the win that followed were absolutely massive, and could have huge bearings on the league. With Manchester City and Manchester United losing and drawing respectively we moved up to second, with Leicester the only other team in the top four to win.
We’ve got a number of injuries to contend with at the moment, but we’ve still got a top quality squad. We deserve to be challenging for the league title, and we can’t do that if we continue to drop points against teams who are arguably relegation candidates.
Arsenal transfer news
Sunderland have looked resurgent under Sam Allardyce, so a win today despite not being our best is huge. We’ve got Aston Villa next, and if Leicester drop points we could go top of the league before we face a slightly trickier run of fixtures.
