Olivier Giroud has had to endure a huge amount of criticism since he arrived at Arsenal, with the Frenchman really not getting the recognition he deserves. Arsenal and Liverpool legends Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher believe there are very few better strikers out there however, and those that are just aren’t available to Arsenal.
Giroud grabbed his 15th goal in all competitions against Manchester City this past Monday night, certainly not an unimpressive tally. He seems to take plenty of flak regardless of form though, and that doesn’t look like changing any time soon.
At least the pundits are starting to give him the plaudits he deserves though, and Henry and Carragher believe there are no better strikers available to us.
The Sky punditry pair admit that Giroud is a step below world class strikers like Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski, but claim that all options better than the 29-year-old are already at the top clubs and are simply unavailable.
It’s hard to disagree, as if you watch Giroud play you can see the quality he possesses. There are only a handful of players who have scored more than the Arsenal man in the Premier League this season, and he offers more than just a goal threat. Giroud has excellent hold-up play, solid link-up, and an incredible work rate. He isn’t the solution to breaking down every opponent, but at times he is exactly what Arsenal need.

As Carragher and Henry say, we could theoretically improve on Giroud. It would take a huge investment to convince top clubs to sell their assets though, and the same to convince top players to leave said clubs. Carragher suggests we would be spending £50 million plus for the sake of an extra six or seven goals a season, and that Giroud is really the best option we have available to us at the moment.
We would obviously all like a world class striker to arrive at the club this season, but it’s unlikely to happen this January. Arsene Wenger seems confident Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott can do a job, and we know he isn’t a fan of the January transfer window.
Arsenal transfer news
Just because Giroud is not the best striker in the world, doesn’t mean he deserves the criticism he gets. He’s still a top quality forward, and if your support hinges on whether or not Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo are in your team, then Arsenal probably aren’t the side for you.
We’re in excellent form this season, and a large part of the reason we’ve coped so well in the absence of Alexis Sanchez is the form of Mesut Özil and Olivier Giroud.
