Former Liverpool defender and now Sky Sports football pundit Jamie Carragher is desperate to see Arsenal win the Premier League, according to his latest column in the Daily Mail.
At Christmas, Arsenal sit second in the table, just two points behind shock leaders Leicester City. The Foxes lost their Boxing Day fixture against Liverpool 1-0, so the Gunners have a chance to nick top spot when they travel to Southampton for the late kick off.
Following Monday night’s 2-1 win over over Manchester City at the Emirates, Arsenal are now the bookies’ favourites to win the title, according to Oddschecker. Carragher clearly agrees with the bookmakers, saying he wants to see the 66-year-old Frenchman lift the trophy in May.
“Seeing Leicester top on Christmas Day was fantastic,” he wrote in his weekly column for the Daily Mail.
“Their story in 2015 could not have been scripted and I genuinely hope it continues for as long as possible. But if I could pick a team to be champions, I would not hesitate in selecting Arsenal.
“The main reason is for Arsene Wenger. He changed football when he arrived in England but for the last five or six years he’s had to endure a lot of stick from the media, pundits (guilty!), Jose Mourinho and even his own fans. But Wenger very rarely reacts, and he tries to take it all in his stride.
“His team are moving in the right direction and, after two FA Cups, I would like to see him lift the Premier League trophy again. It would be an achievement to crown his outstanding career.”
This admission may come as a bit of a shock to many Liverpool fans, but given the reality of the situation we do not believe that any of them actually think they could be in with a chance to win the title.
Arsenal transfer news
Jürgen Klopp’s men did however, do Arsenal a big favour when they beat Claudio Ranieri’s team 1-0 at Anfield on Boxing Day. Coupled with a Gunners win at Southampton this Saturday evening, this will put Arsenal in top spot ahead of the new year, the place they would like to be at the end of the season.
