Ahead of the Champions League draw being made on Monday (via the BBC), history meant Arsenal fans weren’t hugely optimistic about getting favourable opposition – especially after finishing second in our group.
It was hardly a surprise to many of us therefore, that we drew Barcelona in the round of 16. There are obviously mixed feelings about our chances, with some more confident and some believing we’re already as good as out of the competition.
While being paired with Barcelona – arguably the best team in the world right now – is a blow for us though, it’s also not great for the La Liga giants. Barcelona are obviously confident they can get the win over any team in the world, but there are plenty of teams they would have preferred to be matched up with.
It’s impossible to deny that Barcelona would have preferred a draw against someone like Gent, Dynamo Kiev, Zenit St Petersburg, or PSV Eindhoven, and there were actually very few options worse than us where Barca were concerned.
There are mixed feelings coming from their own fans too, and it’s widely believed that Arsenal is a tough draw for Luis Enrique’s side.
Bad draw for Arsenal? Maybe so. But bad draw for Barcelona too…

@FutbolSergi would be interesting but I think arsenal is a bit risky

Barça fans should not underrate Arsenal. The game holds in February, 2 months, a lot of things can happen during this period.

Last time we faced Arsenal they didn’t have Petr Cech and Alexis Sanchez. Giroud and Ozil weren’t playing well, they are now.

Barcelona currently have arguably the best front three in footballing history, and we’d be mad not to fear them. They aren’t unbeatable though, and we’ve put a number of top quality performances of our own in this season.
Our impressive wins over the likes of Manchester United and Bayern Munich show we’re capable of getting big wins when the pressure is on, and the pressure will certainly be on in February.
Arsenal transfer news
The likes of Petr Cech, Mesut Özil, and Olivier Giroud are in fantastic form this season, and hopefully will still be performing this way in the new year. It’s certainly going to be tough, but we’re definitely capable of getting the win over Barcelona if we’re at our best.
