Mesut Özil has been setting records all over the place this season, and looks well on his way to set a huge one in the English top flight. The current all time Premier League assist record for a season is held by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, but Özil is closing in on the Frenchman’s record fast.
The German playmaker has been piling on the chances for his teammates this season, and already broke the record for assists in consecutive games (via Sky Sports). His assist against Tottenham put him joint top with Cesc Fabregas, although the Spaniard’s tally was spread across two clubs and two seasons three years apart.
He then shot clear at the top of the table with an assist against West Bromwich Albion however, giving him a record of assisting in seven consecutive matches. It’s a shame he was only able to score the goal against Norwich rather than assisting, or following his assist against Sunderland he would have now been on nine.
If the former Real Madrid man keeps going at his current pace, then he should obliterate Thierry Henry’s record. The ex-Gunner’s 20 assists in a single season currently still stands strong, but with Özil on 12 before the half way point he has an excellent chance of beating it.
At this point in the 2002/03 season Henry had registered just five assists, but his numbers shot up during the tail end of the campaign. His closest rival to the crown has been Frank Lampard, who during his time at Chelsea managed 18 assists in one season, and by this point was on nine.
The form Özil is in at the moment, 20 should be easily achievable. Could the playmaker even make it to the big three-zero?

Özil is in the form of his life at the moment and has been integral to the success we’ve had so far this season. We’ve been totally rocked by injuries once again, but thanks in large part to Özil’s brilliance we are up in second spot in the Premier League, two points off the top and ahead of the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Tottenham.
