Yaya Toure took a real battering from Liverpool and Arsenal legends Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry following Manchester City’s 2-1 loss against Arsenal last Monday night, with Carragher in particular really laying into him.
The former Liverpool man labeled the Ivorian selfish, a joke, and suggested that was old and lazy too. It’s hard to disagree with the sentiment either, and the lack of passion and effort shown by Toure was a large part of the reason we were able to get the win over our title rivals.
Toure scored a fantastic goal to give City a few minutes of hope in the dying stages of the game, but other than ten minutes of quality in the latter stages, he was a ghost for most of the match.
He was one of those tasked with keeping tabs on Mesut Özil throughout the match, something he clearly failed to do as the German grabbed two assists and ran the game. Toure failed to track back adequately, visibly showed not even a hint of effort, and only seemed to come to life when there was a chance of individual glory.
Carragher picked up on this, and really got stuck into the veteran midfielder during the post game analysis. It was nothing more than he deserved, and mercenaries like Toure are what hold City back from being a real powerhouse in Europe.

Arsenal’s team cohesion and the fact that we have players who love the club gives us a real edge at times, and the fact that we don’t have “selfish” and glory hunting players in our side is a huge boon to the club.
