We have to cast ourselves back almost 12 years ago to remember a winter transfer window as pivotal as that of 2004. Sure Andrei Arshavin’s dramatic last ditch move to the Emirates in 2010 was memorable and his four goal haul against Liverpool not long after proved his potential – but Jose Antonio Reye’s move to north London proved to be a stroke of pure genius by Arsene Wenger that aided in our unbeaten season.
It’s rare for our 66-year-old manager to spend really big in the winter window. Sure we’ve done some tidy business over the years in January, Nacho Monreal and Gabriel Paulista immediately string to mind, but a record breaking, really exciting signing hasn’t occurred for some time.
Arshavin may have taken the mantle of Arsenal’s most expensive signing away from Reyes (after the various bonuses involved), but nobody can take away the fact that he soon became an Invincible and greatly aided the Gunners title charge.
The potential signing of Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund could prove an even greater stroke of genius by Wenger. The Gabon international would represent a major coup, albeit remains a very long shot.
There are murmuring’s of the in-form striker missing training (via Sky Sports), all we know is Dortmund will not sell easily and it will take a record equaling or breaking bid to secure his services mid season.
Should we place all our eggs in this one, rather tasty basket? There are little options available out there, and if Arsene Wenger can lure Aubameyang away from a Dortmund side who have had their problems in the recent past, it would represent a massive signing and someone who can flourish under the Frenchman’s tutorship.

With the Bundesliga likely out of reach with Bayern Munich’s continued dominance, it could well be the right time for Aubameyang to seek greener pastures. And the Emirates is flourishing right now.
