Arsene Wenger claims Mesut Özil has been carrying a minor injury for weeks, which is why the Frenchman left him out of the squad that faced Stoke City this past weekend, according to The Independent.
Özil watched our goalless draw against Stoke from home, unable to help his teammates get the win over Mark Hughes’ side. Wenger claims the foot injury that kept him sidelined this past weekend is nothing new though, and revealed that the World Cup winner was carrying the knock against Liverpool as well.
“He had an inflammation on his foot and yesterday morning we looked and he was not very well. He was not 100 per cent at Liverpool so I decided to leave him out,” Wenger said.
Thankfully though, Wenger believes a week is all the rest the World Cup winner will need, and suggested he’d be back in time for our clash with Chelsea this weekend.
“I think he should be back for next Sunday,” he continued.
Özil has practically been an ever present for the side this season, and his goals and assists are a large part of the reason we currently find ourselves top of the Premier League. To be without him for any significant length of time would be a real blow, so the news that he’ll return this weekend is a huge boon.
Our lack of creativity was evident against Stoke, and although we’ll never know just how much Özil’s omission changed the outcome, you have to think we would have had a better chance with him in the side.
Arsenal transfer news
Injuries have forced some of our most creative players out of action this season, which has obviously curbed our goalscoring. Several players look to be on their way back though, so hopefully that changes soon.
