Arsenal have announced new signing Mohamed Elneny will wear No 35 for the season (via Arsenal.com) after he finally sealed his move from FC Basel today, taking away the number previously held by the on-loan Gedion Zelalem.
The Egypt international has had to settle for 35 with most first choice numbers occupied (apart from that magical number ‘9’…I wonder..?) and a series of higher profile players retaining their numbers despite being out on loan.
The number 35 has been previously worn by the infamous Emmanuel Frimpong, Francis Coquelin before him, and more recently Zelalem who is currently with Rangers on loan in Scotland. Whether there is something deeper about stripping the promising youngster of his number remains to be seen, especially with other numbers around the ’30’ mark available.
Regardless, it’s great to see Elneny slipping into his Arsenal shirt and joining up with the squad ahead of a crunch Premier League tie with Stoke City this weekend.
