We failed to make a single deadline day signing this winter, but were apparently close to bringing Fulham’s 16-year-old wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon to the club, according to the Mirror.
Arsene Wenger was looking to add even more firepower to the academy, and was hoping to bring the left-sided star up to the Premier League. The report claims Fulham were keen on securing Serge Gnabry on loan, but we were unable to complete a deal before the transfer window slammed shut.
Sessegnon has been likened to Real Madrid star Gareth Bale, and “is regarded as one of the best left sided prospects in youth football since Gareth Bale” (via the Mirror).
Wenger was clearly hoping to use Gnabry as a makeweight in the deal, but Fulham were unwilling to part with the youngster. They clearly see him as a top prospect for the future, and aren’t looking to let him go on the cheap.
This doesn’t look like it’s going to be the end of our pursuit though, as Wenger is apparently very keen on the youngster. We’ve been tipped to return for the Cottagers’ teen star this summer, when Wenger may have less time restraints. With Sessegnon so highly rated however, he’s likely to have plenty of suitors looking to beat us to the punch.
Arsenal transfer news
Arsenal fans were obviously hoping for more news on senior signings as opposed to youth additions, but unfortunately it was a fairly quiet transfer deadline day where Arsenal arrivals were concerned.
