We’ve been sensationally linked with a move for Manchester United’s midfield veteran Michael Carrick, with the England international’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, as reported by the Express.
Carrick is apparently set to leave Manchester United at the end of the season, with the club choosing not to offer him a new deal. He’s attracting interest from an unnamed Chinese club as well as Arsenal and Newcastle, but a move to north London seems totally insane.
Carrick is unquestionably well past his prime, and while he still has a few real qualities, he’s just not what we need in the slightest. We already have an ageing, ball playing midfielder in Mikel Arteta, and if Arsene Wenger were to pick up Carrick on a free Arsenal fans would probably go mental.
Wenger has a habit of trying to pick up bargains, but surely Carrick is a step too far even for him. He’s already playing more of a bit part role with United, and he’d be doing exactly the same, if not more so, with Arsenal.
Arsenal transfer news
We need to make signings this summer certainly, but we should be looking to sign quality players not rejects from a fallen from grace United side. This is without a doubt one of the most ridiculous rumours we’ve heard in a while, and if this one goes through we’ll go out, buy several hats, and then eat them.
