A new striker is high on our list of priorities this summer, and Arsene Wenger is apparently willing to “give everything” to secure the signing of long-term target Gonzalo Higuain, according to reports in Spain (via the Metro).
We’ve been linked with the Argentine since his days at Real Madrid, but were beaten to his signing by Serie A side Napoli. He’s been a real success in Italy, so much so that Wenger has continued to pursue the striker ever since he made the switch.
Napoli haven’t always found themselves amongst Europe’s elite, which resulted in rumours circulating regarding an exit for Higuain. A player of his quality understandably wants to be competing in the Champions League, and while we’ve been able to offer that consistently over the years, Napoli are unable to say the same thing.
The Italian side are looking strong this season though, and are actually battling it out with Juventus for the title rather than struggling to break into European spots. This would obviously weaken our position, but reports from Spain claim we’re determined to get a deal done.
As the Metro states, the most recent valuation of the player by Napoli stands at £70.5m, which is an astronomical fee. There’s no way Wenger would be willing to match that figure, as that’s more in the realm of Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez, or Gareth Bale money.
Higuain could be an excellent acquisition, but if we’re forced to pay more than £30m-£35m for him then it really doesn’t seem worth it.

Arsenal transfer news
The report doesn’t come from the most reliable of sources, so it should be taken with a pinch of salt. We may well still be monitoring Higuain, but if Napoli aren’t willing to significantly lower their asking price then this one appears dead in the water.
