Benik Afobe doesn’t understand why Olivier Giroud gets so much criticism, and heaped praise on the French forward following our 2-0 win over Bournemouth this past weekend, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Having recently made a club record move to Bournemouth from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Afobe has started his Premier League career well. He always looked like a bright prospect in the Arsenal academy, but with the competition ahead of him he wasn’t getting anywhere near the team and after several loan spells eventually made a permanent switch away from the Emirates.
Having only just left Arsenal fairly recently though, he obviously spent time with some of the senior players – Olivier Giroud being one. The young forward enjoyed the occasion on Sunday even if his side didn’t get the win they wanted, and praised Giroud following the game.
“He said some nice words about me before the game. It was nice to hear that from someone who is a world-class centre-forward,” he said.
“I don’t know why he gets a lot of stick because he scores goals every season and is a great guy as well. It was nice to see him and play against him.
“He got my shirt as well. I don’t know how much he wanted it but he has got my shirt.”
It’s a shame Afobe never made the breakthrough at Arsenal, as he was always a promising talent and looked destined to become a Premier League striker – even if it wasn’t going to be with us.
Arsenal transfer news
He’s certainly right to defend Giroud too, as the 29-year-old gets far too much unwarranted criticism. Nobody ever said he was the best striker in the world, and we could certainly improve on him if we spent big in the transfer market. He has an excellent goalscoring record and has done a fine job since he arrived at the club though, and the criticism largely seems to come from spoiled Gooners who expect a Thierry Henry or an Ian Wright to be leading the line.
