We all know Mesut Özil is an assist machine, but when we compare his stats to other legends of the game they become all the more impressive. The German playmaker has already created a whopping 106 chances this season, despite still having 12 games to go. This is more than Ryan Giggs and Steven Gerrard ever managed in an entire campaign, with the Manchester United and Liverpool legends tied on 104 chances created, as reported by the Mirror.
With the massive number of chances created, it’s almost a surprise that the World Cup winner has only racked up 17 Premier League assists. That measly figure is still verging on record breaking though, and is way ahead of anyone else in the English top flight.
With roughly a third of the campaign to go, it would be a massive surprise were Özil not to break Thierry Henry’s assist record. He endured a little dry spell at the start of 2016, with the entire team struggling for goals. He was still creating plenty of chances, but we just weren’t putting them away – with three consecutive goalles games. That looks to have changed recently though, with four goals in the last two games, all by different goalscorers.
It may not just be the assists record Özil breaks this season though, as he could also break Frank Lampard’s chances created record. The former Chelsea and Manchester City man managed an impressive 134 chances created in one season back in 2008/09, but if Özil continues at his current rate he should smash that (via the Mirror). The report suggests that at 4.4 chances a game he should reach 134 in no time, with the former Real Madrid man on course to create 159 chances.
Arsenal transfer news
Özil is in the form of his life at the moment, and has been the driving force behind what will hopefully continue to be a title push. He’s been key to our success this season and will no doubt continue to be over the next few months.
