Arsenal youngster Chuba Akpom has shared his delight at seeing fellow academy product Alex Iwobi in the Gunners first team and vowed to be playing alongside him next season according to BT Sport.
The 20-year-old has enjoyed loan spells with Brentford, Coventry, Nottingham Forest and was allowed to join Hull City on a season-long loan deal in August. The striker is currently on international duty with England U21’s and scored a brace against Switzerland in a Euro qualifier on Saturday night.
Akpom, who has been part of the Arsenal set-up since the age of six and has set his sights on proving to Arsene Wenger that he deserves to be in Arsenal’s squad next season.
He told BT Sport:
“It’s always good to see young British talent shining in the Premier League”.
“Alex [Iwobi] I grew up with, he’s like a brother to me, so I’m buzzing for him and his progress and I’ve told him hopefully it will be me and him playing together next season.”
“This summer and in pre-season I’m going to do the best that I can.”
Akpom is yet to achieve a season where he has scored over 10 goals, despite making well over 50 appearances for five different clubs including four loan spells away from the north London side. At Hull City, he’s made a respectable 35 appearances including 20 starts in all competitions for the season, scoring seven goals. While Akpom is clearly a wonderful talent with plenty of pace, skill and dribbling ability, he still needs to improve on his finishing to become the deadly striker the manager and the fans expect him to be.
The pre-season could be a big one for Akpom, who might have a big chance to impress Arsène Wenger, as Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck are unlikely to start the season as they will be recovering from representing their countries at Euro 2016. That means Akpom could have a couple of games up front for the Gunners, so there’s a chance to convince the boss he’s ready to play for the first team.
