Arsenal are set to offer Alex Iwobi new contract that could see his current wages increased ten-fold. The rise comes after the youngster impressed in recent first team games, according to reports in the Evening Standard.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has broken into Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans over the past few weeks, netting his first senior goal for the Gunners in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Everton and also started against Barcelona in the Champions League three days prior.
The Nigerian signed a new deal earlier this season, but is currently being paid less than £1,000 a week. Reports in the Evening Standard claim the club are set to offer him fresh terms that will see his wages rise to more than £10,000 a week.
His form has also led to suggestions that England are drawing up late plans to keep him from the clutches of Nigeria whom he’s eligible to play for. However The Three Lions move is to be in vein, with the youngster already arriving for duty with Nigeria ahead of their clash with Egypt.
The youngster was given his first UEFA Champions League start against Barcelona in midweek and was also handed his full Premier League debut at Goodison Park few days later, and Iwobi did not disappoint. His most memorable contribution was his goal, racing on to Hector Bellerin’s long ball to fire underneath Joel Robles. The confidence with which he took that goal spoke volumes about his maturity and readiness for the senior stage.
There was more to his performance than that. Iwobi was a menace all day long, interchanging brilliantly with Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck and bringing flexibility and unpredictability to the Arsenal attack. His versatility granted Alexis more opportunities to roam, and that helped to create the first goal—a stunning one-two between the Chilean and Ozil led to Welbeck rounding Robles and tucking home.

It was telling that Theo Walcott, so poor in recent months, did not even get off the substitutes’ bench. For the time being at least, Iwobi has leapfrogged the England international in the pecking order. Hopefully the youngster will continue his rise and provide that much-needed youthful spark that the Gunners have been missing.
