Benfica’s teenage superstar Renato Sanches is causing a bit of a stir at the moment, attracting the attention of some top clubs. Manchester United seems to be his most likely destination for some reason, but Arsene Wenger is apparently looking to hijack the deal, as reported by the Daily Mail.
The 18-year-old is a fantastic prospect and is incredibly highly rated in Portugal, with Manchester United chasing his signature for quite some time. He’s got a ridiculous buyout clause in his contract though, which has prevented him from going anywhere.
The Daily Mail claims he’s got a £60m buyout clause in his contract, which is absolutely astronomical for a relatively unproven teenager. He’s not even a regular with Benfica yet, and while in modern football it’s not uncommon to pay for potential, shelling out even close to his buyout clause would be farcical.
If Arsene Wenger splashed even half of that on an unproven teenager, then unless he turned out to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, Arsenal fans would absolutely riot.
Arsenal transfer news
The Frenchman has been heavily criticised for his unwillingness to spend big in the transfer market, but if and when he does eventually buck that trend he needs to invest sensibly in the established stars we need. At, £60m, £50m, £40m, or even £30m, would any Arsenal fan really mind if we left this one to United?
