The transfer rumour mill is now in full swing, with Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Mario the latest player being linked with a move to Arsenal, as reported by TMW.
Mario has been attracting attention from several clubs following an excellent season, scoring five goals and assisting nine times in 29 appearances. The 23-year-old has apparently been scouted by Arsenal ahead of a potential summer transfer, although Sporting are likely to be keen to hold onto him.
The Portuguese international is currently under contract until 2020, so he’s unlikely to come cheap if we do pursue him. We aren’t short of funds though, so we’ll get to see exactly how much Arsene Wenger wants to get his hands on the Primeira Liga star.
This isn’t exactly the transfer story Arsenal fans are wanting to hear about, as he’s arguably not the player we should be focusing on. As great as it is when Wenger finds a relatively unknown gem – with Mohamed Elneny proving a huge success after going from little known star to household name – we really need to be signing more established stars to not only appease fans, but also to fix the mental block we seem to have when it comes to winning titles.
Arsenal transfer news
We’ve yet again failed to clinch the title, with Leicester City and Tottenham both ahead of us in the table. We once again look closer to missing out on top four rather than winning the title, and with the shape the Premier League is in this season that’s hugely disappointing. Arsenal fans want to see some big names who know what it takes to win arriving this summer, and although Joao Mario may be a great player, he doesn’t tick those boxes.
