Borussia Monchengladbach’s sporting director Max Eberl believs his side may well be able to keep hold of reported Arsenal target Granit Xhaka, claiming the club have become “sexy” and appealing recently, as reported by the Daily Star.
We’ve been continuously linked with a move for the Swiss international over the last couple of transfer windows, with recent reports suggesting we’d even lodged a £24m bid (via the Daily Star).
The Bundesliga side are apparently holding out for closer to the £35m mark though, with Eberl speaking to the media and confirming that while no bid had actually been made, a £24m bid would be instantly refused.
“They need not even send the fax with a £24m offer for Granit Xhaka,” he said.
“I fear it could get very tumultuous regarding rumours in summer.
“There is currently no offer from England and I’ll keep you up to date when the first faxes roll in.
“Our club has become sexy. We’ve undergone a fantastic development.
“It’s obviously our dream to play in the Champions League again but dreams are hard to achieve.”
With the links so strong and consistent, it does seem like there could be some semblance of truth behind them. However, we’ve seen incredibly persistent rumours amount to nothing in the past, so for the moment must take this one with a pinch of salt.
The same report suggests Xhaka is ready and willing to make a move to the Emirates if a deal can be agreed, with a switch to the Premier League appealing to the 23-year-old.
It’s hard to see Arsene Wenger meeting the German side’s demands and splashing £35m on Xhaka, but we certainly need to make a few signings this summer.
There are several players who look likely to leave the club come the end of the campaign, and even without their imminent exits, we need reinforcements.
Arsenal transfer news
Xhaka may not be among those who arrive this summer, but if we don’t see at least two or three players arrive at the club then the fan pressure on Wenger will only increase.
