Arsenal are apparently expected to make a bid for Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez in the “coming weeks”, with the 25-year-old’s impressive form making him a top target for Arsene Wenger, according to French outlet Le 10 Sport (via the Metro).
Mahrez has been phenomenal this season, so understandably he’s being pursued by a number of top clubs. Arsenal fans would be thrilled if we could secure his signature this summer, but he’s unlikely to come cheaply.
The report suggests that Barcelona and Real Madrid are also targeting the Algerian international, and if we’re getting into a bidding war with the La Liga giants then it’s probably not going to end well for us.
That said though, we have no idea how Mahrez may feel, and for all we know he may be determined to remain in the Premier League. His first team opportunities are likely to be far more restricted at Barcelona or Real Madrid, and he has to know that he’s unlikely to get a game ahead of Lionel Messi, Neymar, or Luis Suarez.
Conversely, he could certainly earn a first team spot at Arsenal, with Alex Iwobi likely to be the only player ahead of him in the pecking order at the moment.
We badly need attacking reinforcements, with our current options really not making the grade. Joel Campbell, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Theo Walcott have all failed to impress this season, and we really need better options. It’s impossible to tell whether Mahrez will end up being a bit of a one season wonder or not, but if he’s not then we could really regret missing out on him.
Arsenal transfer news
Leicester City will obviously want to keep hold of him, but it’s hard to see the Foxes even coming close to repeating their heroics this season. The congested fixture list that comes with European competition is likely to take its tole, and players like Mahrez may feel that after this fantastic season they should go out on a high and make the switch to a bigger club. Could it be Arsenal?
