Mesut Özil has been fantastic this season, but throughout his career he’s been criticised for being lazy. This is largely down to his body language and demeanor rather than actually being lazy, and the German international insists it’s something he intends to change, according to Goal.
The World Cup winner claims it’s easy to see when he’s frustrated, as it really shows in his body language. It’s something he wants to change for the fans, so they don’t get the wrong idea and start thinking he doesn’t care.
“My goal is to make sure my body language is right,” Özil told BT Sport (via Goal).
“When I make a mistake, I get annoyed and you can tell from my body language. But these days I try to make sure that I don’t do that anymore because in football you can make mistakes and play a bad pass.
“It is more for the fans, the people who watch the game, [rather than team-mates], because they might think that I’m not fighting anymore.”
While real football fans know Özil is anything but lazy – with the former Real Madrid star often covering more ground than most players on the pitch – it’s easy to see where the idea that he’s lazy comes from.

He makes everything look so effortless, which leads many to think he’s not putting the effort in. However, while his tracking back and defensive work-rate occasionally leaves a little to be desired, going forward he gives 110%.
Arsenal transfer news
It’s not really necessary for Özil to change his body language, but it can only really be a positive thing. Improving his image will improve the reception he gets, and could mean the masses start realising the quality he has rather than continuously saying ‘he’s great, but…‘.
