Mesut Özil is one of the six players nominated for the PFA Player of the Year this season, with the German international named alongside players from West Ham, Tottenham, and Leicester City, as reported by Sky Sports.
The World Cup winner deserves his place, but is facing stiff competition from Harry Kane, N’Golo Kante, Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, and Dimitri Payet.
It’s hardly surprising to see the Leicester trio in there, as the Foxes look certain to lift the title this season. Nobody expected them to even come close to challenging this season, but the performances of Mahrez, Kante, Vardy, and the rest of the team have ensured that they deserve their place at the top of the table.
Harry Kane is also a bit of a no brainer, with the Tottenham striker unfortunately looking likely to win the Golden Boot this season. He started the season slowly and it looked like the England international may have even been a bit of a one season wonder. He overcame a difficult period and got back among the goals though, and has really helped Tottenham shoot up towards the top of the table.
West Ham have also been pretty outstanding this season, and are battling for a top four spot during the last few games of the campaign. A large part of that has been due to the quality of Payet, who has been absolutely phenomenal since his move to the Premier League last summer. The Hammers were a far weaker looking side during the time the Frenchman was sidelined with injury, but they’ve been rejuvenated since his return. He seems unlikely to go any further than the shortlist, but he still deserves his place in the list.
Unfortunately, Özil is unlikely to win the award either. Early on in the season he looked like a real candidate, but not only has he slowed down a little in the second half of the campaign, but the fact that Arsenal as a club have stuttered yet again has really impacted his chances.

He looked set to smash the assists record around Christmas time, but he’s really slowed down since then – albeit largely due to his teammates’ failure to convert chances.
Arsenal transfer news
It would be great to see Özil lift the PFA Player of the Year award, but unfortunately this season we might have to settle for him being nominated.
