Ex-Arsenal star turned Sky pundit Paul Merson has predicted a 2-1 win for Arsenal against West Ham this weekend, but his reasoning isn’t exactly the most sound.
Merson believes it should be a fantastic game, with both teams needing to go all out to get the win. West Ham need maximum points after their disappointing draw against Crystal Palace last weekend, while we really need to be winning all our remaining games if we want to keep our slim chances of lifting the Premier League trophy come the end of the campaign.
The Hammers are still well in with a chance of Champions League football, but with a tricky fixture list ahead of them their draw with Palace was a real blow.
Merson is right when he says both teams will have to go all out, but the reason he gives Arsenal the edge is due to the pressure being off. If both teams need the win then the pressure isn’t exactly off, but hopefully he’s right about the result.
“Both teams need to win,” he wrote in his Sky Sports column. “It’s a good game really because a draw is no good to either of them. If Arsenal think they are going to win the league then they need to win this and a victory is as important to West Ham if they are to get in the top four.
“This is a hard one to call because West Ham are doing really well, but no one is better than Arsenal when playing without pressure.”

West Ham have been fantastic this season, and with a number of standout performers they’ve looked like real top four contenders. This weekend’s game is going to be anything but easy, but if we play the way we did against Watford we shouldn’t have a problem.
Arsenal transfer news
Leicester haven’t exactly been dominating the last few games, scraping by with 1-0 wins, so it’s definitely possible they could slip up. Therefore, until it’s mathematically impossible we should make sure we don’t give up.
