Arsene Wenger is planning to have a discussion with Mesut Özil over comments made regarding Arsenal’s title push this season, with the manager not happy with the German’s take on thing, as reported by BT Sport.
Özil spoke about his disappointment at our unsuccessful season, suggesting that the team had nobody to blame but themselves. He also highlighted the fact that the league title was no longer in our hands, and we were now relying on a huge number of mistakes from Tottenham and Leicester.
“Looking at our season so far, we have to be honest and admit that we mucked it up ourselves,” he said.
“We did not play to our potential in the games against the so-called smaller teams. You immediately get punished for that in the Premier League.
“But we still have a chance of winning the title. We have to hope Leicester and Tottenham slip up and then make the most of it.”
Arsene Wenger reacted badly to the comments, suggesting Özil shouldn’t be talking like that. He insisted belief was key in the Premier League, and in no uncertain terms suggested it wasn’t over until the fat lady sings.

“The statement is not welcome, I agree with you,” Wenger said.
“Because we have to believe, no matter if it just one chance in 100, we have to believe. We only have a real chance if we believe.
“We will talk about that. Yes, of course.
“I have nothing against that. You want to be fair and honest.
“But you want as a well to look forward. Our biggest deficit compared to last season was the chances we created and the goals scored. We’ve created more chances than last year and scored less goals.
“I think the worst thing in life is to have wrong beliefs. So you have to make sure that you give absolutely your best, and at the end accept that if somebody is better than you, that you have given your best.
“The worst thing for us would be not to believe, and then if we had a good run it was available, possible. I believe that we have to make sure that we play with passion until the end. That is the best way to get the supporters behind us.”
It’s hard to see what Wenger’s problem is really, as Özil really hasn’t said anything out of line. The playmaker has simply stated the facts, that we’re in this situation due to our own failures and we now need to rely on Leicester and Tottenham slipping up.
Arsenal transfer news
Anyone with half a brain can see the gap at the top of the table, and the fact that we don’t have four games in hand means it’s no longer in our hands. Özil isn’t saying winning the league is impossible, he’s merely highlighting the fact that we’re now relying on mistakes from the teams ahead of us.
