We’ve apparently been monitoring Lille’s Sofiane Boufal this season, with the winger putting in a number of hugely impressive performances in Ligue 1. A bid was thought to be on the cards, but a major injury and some serious surgery may have knocked any potential transfer on the head, according to French publication L’Equipe (via the Express).
The 22-year-old has been truly excellent this season, and has consequently caught the attention of a number of top clubs. We were seemingly up against Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester United in the hunt for his signature (via the Express), but Arsene Wenger’s interest may well have cooled after the latest news.
The Moroccan attacking midfielder played less than half an hour of his side’s 1-0 win over Lorient, with his nasty looking injury turning out to be a meniscus tear. Following an MRI scan it was revealed that he would need surgery, and Boufal will now miss up to six months.
While injuries have never stopped Wenger before, with all the backlash he’s receiving at the moment it seems unlikely he’d sign an injured player. It’s a shame, as Boufal’s 12 goals from a wide position make him an excellent prospect, but we really need to be signing players who can instantly come in and make an impact.
Arsenal transfer news
As the Express’ report suggests, Boufal has been dubbed ‘the next Riyad Mahrez’. The current Riyad Mahrez is still going strong though, so perhaps we should go a little higher than the £18m price tag on his head (via the Express) and look to sign the Algerian from Leicester this summer instead.
