We are apparently keen on Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio, with Arsene Wenger looking to make the Argentine star his next signing, according to the Express.

The former teammate of Gabriel Paulista has been excellent for the La Liga side this season, especially with his performances in the Europa League. He’s highly rated and highly sought after, with Manchester United and Barcelona also apparently interested in signing the 25-year-old (via the Express).
However, the report claims we are now leading the race for his signature, as United and Barcelona have turned their attention elsewhere. Jose Mourinho has an entirely different set of transfer targets than his predecessor Louis van Gaal, while Barcelona have apparently identified John Stones as the man they want (questionable, but that’s what the Express says).
Arsene Wenger is apparently desperate to sign a new defender, with neither Per Mertesacker nor Gabriel Paulista cutting it alongside Laurent Koscielny. Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly is his first choice (via the Express), but Musacchio is also on the list.

While a new centre-back is definitely needed, it seems unlikely that Wenger will spend big unless one of our current centre-backs leaves – presumably Per Mertesacker would be the one to make way.
A striker and a wide forward are much more of a priority, but defensive stability could be key to our success next season.
