Granit Xhaka has been consistently linked with a move to Arsenal for quite some time, and the switch seems to be imminent with German publication RP-Online confirming that we’ve lodged a €43m bid.
The Swiss international has been excellent for Borussia Monchengladbach this season, and is understandably being chased by some top clubs. We seem to be leading the race though, with the 23-year-old seemingly keen on a move to the Premier League (via the Metro).
With a number of veterans seeming likely to leave Arsenal this summer – Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky, and Mathieu Flamini all coming to the ends of their respective careers – we’re going to be badly in need of reinforcements. We’ll still have Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, and Jack Wilshere on the books, but Xhaka should offer something a little different to any of them.
Arsene Wenger has been heavily criticised for his transfer dealings in the past, with the manager either failing to do any business at all or waiting far too long and missing out on great opportunities. He’s clearly looking to move early in the transfer market this season though, by getting a deal for Xhaka done as soon as the window opens and before the Euros begin this summer.

Hopefully this won’t be the only player he signs either, as we badly need strengthening in other areas too. A new striker and a wide forward are badly needed, while a centre-back should also be a priority. Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista have both showed real weakness at times this season, and Laurent Koscielny deserves a stronger centre-back partner. The money is there to be spent, so hopefully Wenger spends it.
