Numerous reports have suggested that Granit Xhaka to Arsenal is almost a done deal (via Goal), but rumours from Germany now suggest the two teams are further apart than originally thought, according to Bild.
Borussia Monchengladbach are apparently looking for round about the €40m mark, while Arsene Wenger is looking to drive the price down with an initial €25m bid.
While the volume of reports surrounding Xhaka to Arsenal suggest a deal really is close, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Arsene Wenger really were penny pinching and looking to drive the price down. You’d expect there to be plenty of interest in the Swiss international if he was going to be sold for even close to €25m, so while €40m is a little much, Wenger may well need to significantly boost his offer.
If the Frenchman does end up missing out on Xhaka – or anyone else for that matter – due to his lowball offers this summer, then the fans will be furious. The fact that Wenger recently suggested that the money pit was pretty much bottomless and it was merely a matter of the players not being available would make it all the more frustrating (via the Mirror), and a failure to sign players this summer would be disastrous.
We’ve already seen the gap in the Premier League closed a little this season, and the poor performances of several big teams are unlikely to continue. Without signings we are only going to fall down the pecking order in the English top flight, not to mention the Champions League – if we even continue to qualify.
Arsenal transfer news
Xhaka would be an excellent signing, so Wenger really needs to just bite the bullet and move a little closer to Gladbach’s valuation. We need several signings this summer, and the quicker we get our first name through the door the quicker Wenger can direct his full attention towards the second signing.
