Santi Cazorla believes there needs to be a number of big changes at Arsenal this summer if we are to have any hope of winning the Premier League next season, with our inability to adjust our tactics a major concern, according to the Express.
It’s not a secret that Arsene Wenger likes his teams to play fluid, attacking football, but adaptation is something he needs to learn. There are times when we really need to focus on our defensive stability rather than getting one more goal, and Cazorla is well aware of that.
He suggests a few performances this season really stood out and lost us the title, and they were games that were more than winnable in all honesty.
“Certainly we need to change something, because if we want to win we need to change,” he said.
“We will see what we have to do, but I think we need to be more regular, regular every time.
“This year we lost at home to Swansea, drew at home to Crystal Palace, and this is the difference if you want to win the league.
“For example against Crystal Palace when we were winning 1-0, we need to think about defending sometimes.
“It’s true we have a great mentality and great philosophy, because we always want to attack and always want to score, but sometimes we need to be clever.
“We had a great opportunity [to win the title], we know that and we are disappointed.”
Once again, part of the reason we’ve struggled so badly has been due to injuries. Santi Cazorla has been out for most of the campaign, and he’s far from the only one. This is definitely something that has to change too, and it’s impossible to say it’s all down to bad luck at this point. We suffer a huge amount of lengthy injuries every season without fail, and either we need to do something to avoid them, or Wenger needs to accept they are going to happen and strengthen the squad further to compensate.
Arsenal transfer news
We really do need to make sure we don’t have a repeat of this season next year, as the players are likely to get fed up of the consistent failures at the club. We can’t expect to keep top talent like Cazorla, Alexis Sanchez, and Mesut Özil if we’re not willing to push to improve, so something needs to change. Whether that means a new manager or a change of thinking from the board means very little, but change is definitely required.
