Mesut Özil is entering the final two years of his contract, but the German playmaker is apparently “very close” to signing a bumper new deal, according to the Mirror.
It’s unclear exactly how much Özil is currently on, with a number of reports quoting different sums. He’s most certainly one of the highest paid at the club though, with Alexis Sanchez the only player who could feasibly be earning more.
Arsene Wenger is determined to tie the World Cup winner down to a new long-term deal, and it seems as though he’ll get his wish. Özil was apparently keen to wait until the end of the campaign to put pen to paper (via Sky Sports), but with the season almost over, serious contract talks could begin any day.
It’s hugely important that we keep the former Real Madrid man at the club, not just because we need to be making sure our best players remain where they are, but also because of the statement it would make if we allowed him to leave.
With Özil still the club’s record signing, it would speak volumes if we were to let his contract run down or end up selling him. We need to be adding more players of similar quality rather than running the risk of losing them, and if Özil or Alexis Sanchez were allowed to leave, it would be an absolutely massive blow.

There won’t be a huge amount of time to discuss terms due to the packed schedule this summer, with Özil sure to be in France for the Euro 2016 Championships with Germany. Although the reports claim we’re close to reaching an agreement, we may well be waiting until after the tournament for any real news on a new contract.
