Piers Morgan insists the Arsenal board should look to replace Arsene Wenger with Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri this summer, suggesting that his one successful season with the Foxes means he’d be fit to run things at Arsenal, as reported by the Daily Star.
A huge number of Arsenal fans are calling for Wenger’s resignation at the end of the season, with his repeated failure to challenge for the Premier League starting to really frustrate the supporters.
Morgan has long been anti-Wenger however, and this is just the latest ridiculous rant from the US based journalist.
“I’d take Ranieri tomorrow,” Morgan said.
“Because Ranieri has shown that it’s not just about money and Wenger can’t compete at the top end with the big boys or at the bottom end with the Leicester’s who did it though heart, desire and commitment.”
While you can’t deny that Ranieri has done a fantastic job with Leicester this season and they deserve their title, it’s not like Ranieri has a history of great success. This is his first top flight title, despite managing teams like Inter Milan, Roma, Juventus, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and countless other top clubs.
Nobody expected Leicester City to be anywhere near as strong as they were this season, and although the likes of Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, and N’Golo Kante deserve a huge amount of credit, you can’t take anything away from Ranieri. That said though, this is very likely to be a one off, with lightning surely not going to strike twice. If Leicester are challenging for the title again next season it would be a real shock, and one good season does not make you a top quality manager.
Arsenal transfer news
It’s obviously not that Ranieri is a bad manager, because he clearly isn’t, but demanding that Wenger be replaced by the Italian just because he’s enjoyed one of the craziest and most surprising seasons in history is jumping the gun a bit. Those demanding Wenger’s head are fully entitled to their opinion, but prematurely replacing him with an unsuitable manager can only bring catastrophe.
