Olivier Giroud may have been overshadowed a little by the performance of Dimitri Payet for France this past Friday night, but his goal was arguably just as important to his side’s 2-1 win over Romania during the Euro 2016 Championships opening game.

Giroud has taken a huge amount of flak from the fans of both club and country recently, despite some rather impressive form. He’s scored a huge number of goals in his last few games, and after a severe drought in mid season he’s really finding his goalscoring boots.
He got the opening goal of the Euros this past Friday night too, giving France the lead against a stubborn Romania.

The 29-year-old had a few chances earlier in the game, with Payet putting a couple of decent balls into the box. Giroud was doing well to find himself some space, but the two decent chances he had went wide and over the bar.
He eventually found the back of the net though, out jumping and outmuscling the goalkeeper without crossing the line and fouling him. The ball shot into the goal, and Giroud wheeled away to celebrate the first goal of the tournament.
Arsenal transfer news
Giroud arguably gets far more stick than he deserves, and it’s a real shame that he isn’t appreciated for his qualities. That said though, he can’t lead the line alone at Arsenal, and hopefully he is joined and supplemented by a new striker signing this summer.
It wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see him among the top scorers in the Euros this year, which will hopefully give him a confidence boost heading into the 2016/17 campaign.
