It looks as though the possible transfer of Mauro Icardi to the Gunners may not be happening after all. The 23-year-old Argentinian has reportedly made his thoughts on the matter clear, reiterating that he and his family (including wife Wanda, who as it happens, has a penchant for posting photos of herself in her underwear on Instagram), are happy in Milan (via Corriere dello Sport).
These revelations come after keen-eyed observers deduced Wanda was in London when they noticed the geolocation on one of her tweets earlier this week was the British capital. It was believed she was in town to hold talks with the Gunners, with a deal said to have been on the table which would have seen Icardi receive a big salary boost over what he currently earns at Inter Milan.
But the the striker’s comments appear to have dampened speculation that he will appear in North London anytime soon. “My family’s objective is to stay in Milan. I’ve never hidden the fact that my family is happy here and that goes for Wanda and the kids,” he told Corriere dello Sport, “I’m not interested in rumours and I don’t give a lot of weight to what is said and written in the media. Everyone knows my intention.”
Fairly unambiguous statements there from Icardi, though it’s worth noting he says it is his ‘intention’ to stay in Milan which is not the same as a firm commitment. Still, for my money, it seems likely his wife’s trip to London was more of a fact-finding mission. A bid to find out what Arsenal have to offer in order to extract more money from Inter, which is ultimately where her husband wants to stay.
This may be no bad thing. At 23 years of age it’s fair to wonder if Icardi would have the maturity to perform under the pressure and bright lights of the Premier League, week in, week out. Carlos Bacca, at AC Milan and apparently ready and raring to go, might in this regard be a better option. But at 29, he’s no spring chicken. Perhaps in the end, no one will sign on the dotted line. As ever, we wait with bated breath.
