Alexandre Lacazette is set to be offered a new contract at Lyon but the player wants to join Arsenal (via The Telegraph).
It looks set to be one of the stories of the summer at the Emirates with Alexandre Lacazette simultaneously joining Arsenal and staying at Lyon, depending on which reports you believe.
News broke yesterday that Lyon were confident of holding on to the forward who scored 21 goals in Ligue 1 last season but Saturday’s report in The Telegraph goes against that. Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas said that he didn’t expect a new bid from Arsenal and the French club are set to offer Lacazette a new contract. However Telegraph writer Jason Burt claims that the forward has decided that he wants to join Arsenal.
Burt goes on to say that Arsenal will have to raise their offer to upwards of €50 million to prise the star player away from the club. While he claims that Lacazette wants the move, Burt points out that “Lacazette who, although he wants to leave, is not expected to push for a move in public.
“There is a strong emotional pull for Lacazette to stay at Lyon and coach Bruno Genesio, who has been a big influence on the player after taking over during last season, has met with the France international to stress how important he is to his plans and how much he wants him to stay.”
Today’s report is good news for Arsenal fans who want to see Alexandre Lacazette at the Emirates but it is far from a confirmation that the player will end up at the club next season. There were similar reports when Luis Suarez was linked with a transfer to the club a few years ago but nothing happened there.
Arsenal didn’t bid enough for Suarez back then and there are certainly parallels with the Lacazette transfer this summer. It seems Arsenal will have to make a huge bid for the Lyon forward if they want to solve their striking problem for next season.
