Chelsea are interested in signing Arsenal target Shkodran Mustafi, according to reports in Spain (via Sport Witness), meaning the Gunners must act fast if they want to secure the German international.
News broke last week that Arsenal were in talks with Valencia to sign the German defender but these new reports from Spain will make for worrying news for Arsenal fans. It seemed like the Mustafi transfer was progressing well but these new links from Spanish newspaper AS throw this in jeopardy.
Arsenal are in the market for a new centre back following the injury to Per Mertesacker. Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista are also yet to return to first team action meaning Arsenal only have Calum Chambers and new signing Rob Holding to pick from at the back.
Chelsea incidentally are also in the market for a new centre back. John Terry isn’t getting any younger and while the club have been linked with a move for Kalidou Koulibaly, Mustafi is reportedly seen by the club as another option. Spanish newspaper AS claim that Chelsea have a ‘strong interest’ in signing the German World Cup winner.
Shkodran Mustafi recently arrived in England with his Valencia teammates for a tour ahead of the new La Liga season. Valencia are based in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in London, convienently placed for both Arsenal and Chelsea for any quick medicals.
It’s unclear how much weight should be put into these fresh rumours linking Mustafi with Chelsea. While it wouldn’t be the first time Chelsea have stolen a player from under the noses of a fellow London club, Mustafi is being far more heavily linked with Arsenal than The Blues. Valencia will play AFC Bournemouth and Crystal Palace this week as a part of their pre-season preparations.
