Riyad Mahrez has agreed personal terms to join Arsenal, according to reports from Algeria (via The Daily Star).
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Riyad Mahrez for some time following the winger’s excellent season in the Premier League last year. Arsenal are in the market for a right winger and Mahrez fits the bill. His 17 Premier League goals last season helped Leicester to a most unlikely title and helped the Algerian to being named PFA Player of the Season.
Arsenal’s interest in the player is no secret and these new reports go along with that. They come from Algerian newspaper La Buteur. The paper claims that Mahrez has agreed a deal to join Arsenal and the player is insisting on signing for the North London side. The article goes on to name “the British press” as its source which is where the article falls down.
It seems that La Buteur has simply summarised what was discussed in the British press last week. We discussed these rumours but the latest article adds nothing new. The report discusses Mahrez rejecting a new Leicester contract and the club being angry at the presence of Arsene Wenger at their pre-season friendly against PSG last week. Both of these reports come from the British press.
Mahrez would undoubtedly be an excellent signing for the club and provide some balance to the Arsenal attacking line. He has an incredible goalscoring record – something certain other Arsenal wingers are lacking – and provides a width that is sometimes missing from the Gunner’s play. However these new rumours are far from a confirmation that the player is joining the club. As with most transfers, it’s probably best to just wait and see.
