Arsenal attacker Joel Campbell is in Portugal for a medical, according to reports from the country. The Costa Rican winger was not involved during last weekend’s match against Liverpool and Portuguese news outlet O Jogo claim Sporting Lisbon have struck a loan deal with the North London outfit for the 24-year-old.
Campbell has found breaking into the first team a tricky prospect despite scoring five goals and assisting six last season. The Costa Rican finds himself out of the picture at the Emirates and this move could hand him some much needed first team football.
The Portuguese press are now claiming that Joel Campbell will soon seal a season-long loan move to Sporting Lisbon. It would be Campbell’s fifth loan move since moving to Arsenal and the winger would link up with fellow Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz at the club.
However, his potential exit may surprise a few. Arsene Wenger remains short of options in attack with Olivier Giroud lacking match fitness and Danny Welbeck out with injury until Christmas.
Then of course there are the summer targets which Le Prof has missed out on including Jamie Vardy, Gonzalo Higuain, Riyad Mahrez, and now Alexandre Lacazette. The French forward declared that he will now stay at Lyon.
A possible reason behind this decision could be Serge Gnabry’s exploits at the Rio Olympics. The German midfielder is racking up rave reviews for his stellar displays for the national side and the 21-year-old could now be ahead of Campbell in the pecking order following his 6 goals in 5 matches for the German Olympic Team.
