New reports are coming out of France that Leicester city attacker Riyad Mahrez is determined to sign for Arsenal in the current summer transfer window.
The past week, it was all but confirmed that Mahrez will not be bought by the north London club this summer. Claudio Ranieri spoke to the press about the management’s reservation against selling the Algerian winger and the Thai owner of the Foxes made an Instagram post saying he was not for sale.
But against all predictions, a few days later, news from multiple sources in France are reporting that Mahrez is keen on being a new Gunners addition this summer. ESPN FC and beIN Sport USA correspondent Jonathan Johnson tweeted that Mahrez desires a move to Arsenal despite Leceister’s desires to keep him.
Regardless, the north London giants have made no substantial breakthrough in their chase after the PFA Player of the Season. What is the holdup then? Johnson added that the player doesn’t want to go public with it.
All parties involved in this possible move are suspected to be aware of this, including Arsene Wenger. Jonathan Johnson was quick to point out that Riyad Mahrez is not willing to force a leave from the King Power Stadium.
What would be enough to force the Foxes into selling the 25-year-old – a huge bid, player-plus-cash, or nothing at all? Only time will tell, but the clock continues to tick down on Wenger in the transfer window market.
The English Premier League kick-off is right around the corner, and the need for attackers has now been joined by a new alarming issue – an injury-ravaged defense. Captain Per Mertesacker was ruled out until 2017 after picking up a serious knee injury, whilst Gabriel Paulista is set for 6-8 weeks on the sidelines after his unfortunate knock in the 3-2 win over Manchester City.
A lot is required from Le Prof in what little remains of the summer window. The long-serving Frenchman must act quickly.
