Arsene Wenger has confirmed Arsenal are in talks to sign Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi, however admitted they are struggling with other signings according to quotes on SFR Sport.
The Gunners are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements this summer after injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel, while Laurent Koscielny was hastened back into the lineup for Saturday’s 0-0 draw with champions Leicester City.
Wenger had to date refused to confirm Mustafi was a top target with the deal taking plenty of twists and turns, now the Gunners boss has confirmed talks are ongoing and remains optimistic while admitted they are struggling to bring in other additions.
“Mustafi? We hope it will be done. We are struggling to find the players we need,” said Wenger. “He is one of a number of players we are looking at. Negotiations are ongoing.”
The ‘players we need’ are likely referring to the lack of strikers that are on the market, once again it appears Arsenal are set for another summer without bringing in a centre-forward.
Arsenal lacked the cutting edge against Leicester on Saturday evening and there is no question this has been the priority all summer. A defensive signing is also a necessity, and thankfully the signs appear positive that Mustafi will be a Gunner early next week.
